Sunday is International Kitchen Garden Day

Kitchen Gardens International is a non-profit organization that was founded in Portland, Maine, in 2003 to promote “the ‘localest’ of all food,” in response to the dramatic decline in home-food production in the U.S.  They’re the folks responsible for the Eat the View campaign and video posted here earlier this week. They also established International [...]

Bruce Robison + Firemans #4

It doesn’t get more local than that.  Wednesday evenings this summer, Bandera-born singer-songwriter Bruce Robison plays free shows in the biergarten at Scholz Garten in downtown Austin.  His start-time is a matter of some dispute, but it’s probably safe to say he’ll be playing by 8 this Wednesday evening.  Scholz’s has plenty of Texas-made beers [...]

Do You Dish?

If you haven’t checked it out yet, this is a great time to explore Austin-based Dishola, a social-networking website where folks review meals, one dish at a time. The folks at Dishola have just launched a new newsletter, called Morsels, to which I contributed a bit about a great, locally sourced meal I enjoyed here [...]

Loca-Longhorns

UT’s making a push for local food in its dining halls through a collaboration with local vendors and Austin’s Sustainable Food Center.  The cool video they made takes you into the UT kitchens, to the downtown farmers’ market, and to Naegelin Family Farm to get the full scoop.

Even Wal-Mart is Going Local

A curious press release landed in my in-box on Friday:  Wal-Mart Commits to America’s Farmers as Produce Aisles Go Local in Texas, it’s titled.  The behemoth retailer has even dedicated a website to the cause.  “Offering local produce has been a Wal-Mart priority for years, and we’re taking it to a new level with a [...]

Blue Bell’s August Flavors are Out

These seasonal flavors should be hitting the freezer aisles now:

Banana Pudding
Candy Jar
Caramel Sundae Crunch
Caramel Turtle Fudge
Cherry Vanilla
Chocolate Almond Marshmallow
Chocolate Extreme
Peaches & Homemade Vanilla
Southern Blackberry Cobbler
Triple Chocolate

Get ‘em while you can: Smoke-Dried Tomatoes

I’d read about these on Boggy Creek Farm’s website and come to understand that they have quite a following.  Rumor has it that quantities are limited due to this year’s early summer heat, so I snapped up a bag last week.  Also stocking up was a chef from Blue Star Cafeteria.  He was considering studding [...]

Even better than local

What’s better than eating food grown and produced in Texas?  Doing it without even leaving the house.  Greenling Organic Delivery, a company started in Austin in 2005, now delivers a “Local Box.”  That is, you sign up, pay $34.99, and have a box of whatever produce is fresh and local delivered to your door.  Greenling’s [...]
