When visiting family in the Houston suburbs, Husband and I tend to undergo foodies’ withdrawal from the farmers’ markets and gourmet groceries we’re hooked on at home. Thank goodness Grandma phoned in a request for doughnuts as we turned off I-10 yesterday. Scouring the Sugar Land strip malls to fulfill her request, we stumbled upon Shipley Do-Nuts. This family business, founded in Houston in 1936, rolls and fries doughy goodness all over the state, as well as in others throughout the South. {They even have a location in Austin, on Brodie Lane.} Crisply sweet on the outside and spongy on the inside like glazed doughnuts should be, the dozen we brought home sated Grandma’s craving and took the edge off our symptoms, as well. But we might still sneak to Sugar Land’s new Whole Foods this afternoon to get another fix.

The only issue I have with Shipley’s is that the location on Brodie is RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET from a lovely little family owned doughnut shop. And their doughnuts are so much better than Shipley’s…
Take a trip up to Round Rock for some Round Rock Donuts. Delish.
Is it true their donuts are made with goose eggs?
The “family owned” donut store across the street from Shipley’s is most certainly not better. It takes forever to get your order filled, they don’t accept credit cards, and they don’t have a large selection. My family likes variety, speedy service, and decent prices, so we’ll be going to Shipley’s from now on. Now if only they’d open another location closer to the office!!
